YouTube & Warner Music Group Are Back Together

Youtube and Warner Music Group have come to an agreement today, announcing a new content licensing deal that will bring the label's content back to popular video streaming service after a nine-month absence.

The one distinct difference of the new deal is that Warner will now be the one selling advertising around its videos rather than YouTube. The label can decide the price for those advertisements and keep the majority of the ad revenues that result.

"Members of the YouTube community will not only be able to access videos and other music-related content from Warner Music Group recording artists and songwriters, but will also gain access to an enhanced user experience on YouTube with a feature-rich, high-quality premium player and enhanced channels," read a statement sent by Warner as the deal was announced.

Sources say Warner wants to include more commerce and social networking capabilities to a premium video player YouTube is creating for the label. This could include direct links to the artist Web sites, buy links and chat capabilities in addition to the premium ad space and other details.

YouTube users will be able to include Warner music in the videos they submit as well around which the label can also sell ads if it chooses.

Warner pulled its music from YouTube last December. The label was the first to license its music to YouTube when the service first started negotiating with the music industry back in 2006. When it was time to renegotiate that deal, Warner wanted more money than YouTube was willing to pay, leading to the decision to withhold content from the service.

Given YouTube's sheer dominance of the online video space it was critical for Warner to make this move. According to ComScore, YouTube generated 10 billion streams in August from U.S. users alone. That is about 40% of the online video market!

It will take the remainder of the year to complete before all Warner music videos are back on YouTube. That is including the premium video player and ad platform being created as well.

The Teen Perspective: Love or Money

Hey music heads, I'm "Karpae Dium" and welcome to my column... "Teen Perspective". This column will focus on providing you with my perspective on various music topics as a sixteen year old high school student currently living in Atlanta. Why should you care??? Well - simply because I know music but more importantly because "I BUY MUSIC" and so do most of my peers. Anyone that sells music commercially knows we teens primarily support the music industry buying more music than any other age-group. In fact - one of the major reasons the music industry is experiencing so much decline is because we're just not satisfied with what's coming out of our speakers! According to research done by major research firm NPD Group "In the case of paid digital downloads, 32% of teens purchasing less digital music expressed discontent with the music that was available for purchase" - Well together, we're going to fix that! In this column I will be giving you the highly sought raw insight of us "teenies" as some record labels call them. In addition I'll share updates on music events as well as some cool things I've learned along the way.

Love or Money?!

It isn't hard to figure out why many people in Atlanta are starting there own businesses. In Atlanta the unemployment rate is up to 10.7 percent. That being said people are now doing things they've always wanted to do since they were "teenies", but didn't because it was not practical when they were growing up. Now you're seeing more and more people quitting their jobs and starting music companies or becoming full-time musicians themselves. I was watching the news the other day and a woman speaking said something very profound... she said "I don't love what I do". Later in the show she talks about her new business as a fashion designer. This made me think about why people wouldn't do what they love? It came to me instantly, the reason is Money!! Money alone will make a lot of people second guess almost every decision. That's a dangerous place to be in. There has to come a day where you ask your self... "Should I do music for the love or the money?" Well that's an easy one right...??

WHY YOU DIDN’T GET CHOSEN FOR I dO MUSIC

Quality Song Checklist
by Toya Elise

PART 1.

Before submitting your music to I dO MUSIC, an A&R, or anyone you want to listen to, like and respect your music, take the time to dissect your song and determine the level of quality of work you are putting out. Get opinions from other people. Do NOT submit your music first without having at least 10 other people tell you their HONEST opinion of your work. The more you check off the better. Otherwise we may just tell you to keep your day job

o
Production/Beat Is your production on point?! Good production/beat, is the most essential quality of a good song. It is the first thing noticed about a song and though it may be a bit superficial, it’s a really the #1 deal breaker! I like to compare it to the courting/dating game. In the courting/dating game, the first thing you notice about someone is their looks (beat). No matter how superficial it is, it’s inevitable. In RARE cases will you judge someone’s personality (lyrics/content) before you judge their looks (beat). But once you get to know that person or listen/date that person two or three times, then you can become interested in getting to know that person for their other qualities: their intelligence (lyrics), their conversation (content), their personality (hook), etc. But trust, I will not likely even get that far, if I can’t stand the production.

o
Chorus/Hook Is your chorus/hook catchy? Some people say that a hook can make or break a song. I agree. A great hook can make a decent song seem great and a horrible hook/chorus can make me never want to listen to a good song past the first verse. The hook is called hook for a reason. It’s what hooks the listener and gets them listening to and singing to the song over and over again. But be aware, that a hook/chorus is not always necessary. So make sure you are not adding a hook or chorus that is not needed. Sometimes a good instrumental break works wonders!

o
Lyrics Are you a Wizard of “Awes” with Words? Do your lyrics make the listener say “Awe, that was hot!”. I tend to judge lyrics in two categories. Creativity and/or Thought provoking. Take Tupac and Biggie for example.. Both good lyricists, but on two different levels. Biggie was a creative lyricist, and Tupac was thought provoking truth speaker. But both were hot. Make sure that your lyrics are not cliché and be creative!

o
Content Are you talking about anything the people want to hear? Are you talking about money, cars, clothes and hoes? Or are you talking about uplifting your people? Are you talking about a recent heartbreak? Or the love of your life? Content is very important because it is what makes your audience relate to what you are saying. Sometimes the listener will still like a song even though they may not be able to relate, but trust me, they will like it even ten times better if they CAN relate, so take the time to take your content into some serious consideration!

o
Vocals Can you sing? If you are a singer, then your vocal game NEEDS to be on point. I can’t stand hearing a song where the person just cannot sing! If you cannot sing, but are submitting a song for reference, then please mention that you are a songwriter, and songwriting is your talent, not singing. Otherwise your true talent will get overlooked. There are rare circumstances where an artist can get away with not sounding perfect vocally, but that is RARE. So your best bet is to get some vocal training, and get you’re A-game up in this category!

o
Vocal Arrangement/Flow Do your vocals/flow work with the melody of the production beat? Sometimes it is hard to change up the arrangement of a song once you have already come up with it, But good flow is what distinguishes an amateur artist from a veteran. Rappers, make sure your flow compliments the flow of the beat. And for singers, try your hardest to come up with at least 2 or 3 different vocal arrangements and see which one works best, before settling on the first that comes to mind.

o
Musicality Is there any live instrumentation or instrumentation feel? Though this is not absolutely necessary, however this is absolutely a nice bonus to hear a song that is not strictly fruity-looped. Even sampling a live instrument sound is refreshing if you do not know how to play an instrument. this can make a basic beat seem ten times better.

...CHECK BACK SOON FOR PART 2....

Just Say Yes To.....Mediocrity?

In a market oversaturated with clones and zombies; how did we (artists, musicians, etc.) come to become content with sub par (if that) art? Do we point the finger at the corporate elite? Do we point the finger at A&R’s? Or do the point the finger at ourselves? Personally, I don’t believe in the blame game because we’re all held accountable for our own actions.

I recently had a conversation with a dear friend about the younger generation and Hip Hop. They questioned why most (if not all) embrace and/or mimic the South. I simply stated that the south had been producing hit after hit for the past decade. The artists that are entering the music scene now were probably 6-10 years old at the beginning of the South’s reign. In conclusion, they’ve been exposed to a certain sound for most of their life. As for the older generation, mimicking what’s considered a “HIT” will probably get you signed, accepted, and/or better sales. In theory, we either express ourselves to the degree of our influences or we follow suit.

In no way, shape, or form am I saying that the South is mediocre. Throughout Hip Hop and music in general (including the South), we have phenomenal talent. However, as in nature, rare gems aren’t abundant. Does this have to be? If we have the power to transform ourselves, can we begin to mold a new generation of artists and musicians who rise above and beyond what’s considered the norm to greatness?

After the death of one of the most revered and iconic figures in the music world, I dwelled on the question; how can one soar past the heights that Michael Jackson conquered and owned? Well, first and foremost, one has to see the world outside of him/her self. In order for one to succeed, they must transcend ego and culture and embrace the world. For example, look at the content and melodies of Michael Jackson’s songs. People flocked to buy his albums and embraced him because they could relate and his music touched them on a level that most couldn’t fathom.

Kanye West, the new King of Pop (per Liberation Next), has a similar appeal through his music. He has transcended Hip Hop to explore sounds that span across many genres. I debated with another dear friend about Jay-Z’s BP3 album. The content was above Hip Hop’s level of mediocrity; however, the production had an appeal that I haven’t heard from Hip Hop in ages. When I listened to the album in its entirety (excluding a couple of songs) I didn't think Hip Hop, I thought music.

In conclusion, to the artist and/or musician, when it comes to your art, put forth the effort to travel and explore outside of yourself. We must create new sounds and not only that; begin to craft content that epitomizes the art of storytelling, consciousness, and creativity. So when you step in the studio to produce; are you going to say yes to mediocrity? Or will you refrain from the question and let your heart speak?

Smart Business = Free Money!

Past I dO Music panel alum, Kia Shine, recently proved how he is at the top of his game. According to Shine, he has publishing rights to 25% of Drake's hit record, 'The Best I Ever Had.' Apparently, Shine created the original version of the song for Lil Wayne some time back. He sent his music out and a year or so later, hears parts of the hit record that sound very familiar to his (Shine's) original track.

Now, if Shine had NOT been business savvy and registered his music, he'd be sitting on the sidelines watching someone else reap the rewards! No one could have guessed that the record would grow into what it is now. And that's the key. You never know.

The moral: Don't WAIT to get your business in order. Start now, while you don't have much to lose so that when the pressure is on...it's nothing!

3 Don't EVER's of Managing Fan Email Lists

One of the worst impressions you could leave on a fan is one that communicates that you don't care less about or respect their contact preferences, rights, and privacy.

#1 - Don't EVER buy an email list from some company or individual and start treating them like they're YOUR fans. This goes especially for those infamous DJ and A&R lists you all so passionately seek out...LISTEN and listen closely... This is the fastest and #1 way to end up someone's trash or spam box. Think of it like this - what do you do when you check your mail box at home only to find a bunch of coupons from pizza hut, papa johns, and other people you never asked to send you mail and you think to your self "how the heck did these people get my home address anyway??!?! Exactly - you throw it away faster than Jay-Z can say "Uhg!"

#2 - Don't EVER use subject lines that sound like this: "Free Download", "J. Money Feat. Drake & 50 Cent", or "THE BEST ARTIST IN ATLANTA" (or anything in all caps). In case you didn't know - most email services like gmail, yahoo, and aol filter out messages that sound like spam. And even if your message is lucky enough to sneak by these spam filters it will surely fall victim to the wrath of my morning ritual of feeding my email's trash bin. The best thing to do is be honest. Once getting my permission to email me (see rule #1) in 6 words or less let me know what's in your email and why I should care.

#3 - Don't EVER use badly formatted or tasteless graphic images in your emails!! No - using near naked girls and $100 bills on your CD cover will not get my attention. The one of the most ignorant strategies out there! Think corporate. Think major label. Think honest. Think clean. If your email content is not formatted similar to the ones you get from Def Jam, Sony, or WMG... your have some werk to do. Take your time and get it right and your efforts will surely be rewarded when you see people starting to download your music and subscribe to your website.

Kanye needs a good Publicist right about now..

If any publicity is good publicity, then Kanye West has nothing to worry about. But if Kanye is worried about keeping a positive image of him self in the media, then he needs to look into obtaining a good publicist. Because a good publicist would have told Kanye that he already has a messed up image. - People scrutanize him for being classless and full of ego. - and they would have advised him against doing what he did to Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMA's . Sure he went on his blog afterwards and apologized,... but c'mon..can we say a little to late??

What else would a good publicist do?

A publicist gets press coverage for his client. The publicist is often the middleman between the high-profile personality and members of the media. He usually wants his client to receive positive acclaim, but many publicists surveyed noted the old adage that “the only bad publicity is no publicity.” Politicians and captains of industry require a little more specific spin on their press-they want to be seen as forward-looking and confident-but other professions are less picky, as in the case of the rock star who reveals the sordid details of his seamy nightlife to cultivate a rough image.

Publicists also perform damage control, attempting to counteract any undesirable press coverage the client receives. This position as “last line of defense” is what distinguishes the adequate publicist from the extraordinary one. Good publicists can turn scandal into opportunity and create valuable name-recognition for their clients. Publicists don’t only work for the famous. Sometimes they work for a little-known person or industry and create reasons for them to receive press coverage. In a case where a company desiring publicity is hampered by its esoteric nature or technical jargon, the publicist must translate its positions into easily understandable language.

A major part of the publicist’s day is spent writing press releases and creating press packets, which have photos and information about the publicized person or company. Publicists spend a lot of time on the phone. They put in long hours, and most receive little financial reward in return. They operate under hectic conditions and must adhere to strict deadlines which coincide with publicity events, such as the release of a movie or the publishing of a book. They have to ensure that they get the appropriate information to the media in time for the event they are generating publicity for, such as a record release or automotive sale. They must always be available for comment (even when that comment is “no comment”) and remain friends with the media, no matter how demanding the desires of both clients and the reporters on whom they depend.

Crank It Up! - Industry Standards For Recording

We've all been in this situation before: you are watching a TV program when suddenly, the commercial break comes up. The commercial is much louder than the program you were watching. You turn down the volume, only to have to turn it back up once the program resumes.

This isn't some technical error at your local TV station or even your cable provider. This is an intentional strategy in the broadcasting industry. The idea is to get people to pay attention to the commercials by making them so much louder than the program. This is something also done in the recording industry with regards to music as well. This is changing the way that people record music, even the way people listen to music has changed as a result.

Average volume levels were once much lower in the recording industry. The norm would be 2 to 3 as the volume standard. Recordings would be done at this volume to make for a more pleasant experience for the listener. This also allowed for greater dynamic range on recordings, with a better blend of sounds on record.

Lower volume levels gave engineers the freedom to showcase arrangements and instrumentation. It also allowed them the ability to create greater freedom for movement where volume was concerned. Volume while recording music is a range in which you can increase or decrease the amount of sound. When you work with negative numbers on your volume dial; somewhere between -6 and -1, you have a lot of room to increase the volume if needed.

However, the standard volume has increased as the recording industry has progressed technologically. Currently, the industry standard is closer to 0 - one of the highest possible volumes. Many people do not even notice this and just turn down the volume during playback. This decision by the recording industry has, however, changed the way everything is done in the music recording industry, from the way instruments are recorded to the way that people listen to records.

This higher volume has changed the way that musicians and recording engineers think about dynamics, volume range and instrumentation and arrangements themselves. This has eliminated some of the possibilities for recording which were once parts of the music industry's palate. If you take a close listen to music which has been recorded recently, you may notice that there is a lot less dynamic range than once was the norm, a change in the types of instrumentation used and so on. This is all due to the fact that the volume has been turned up as high as it can go! This has limited the possibilities for musicians and recording engineers.

Volume control and in fact, the entire process of mastering differs according to the format you get your music in. There is a different volume standard for the radio than for CD, which is in turn different than that for MP3 format. Those who have custom recording technologies and setups at their disposal, there can be more freedom in the volume levels and mastering process used. Before recording, you should think about what sort of volume you want your finished product to be at. This will help you make your own way towards the industry standards of producing CDs.

When recording, you should always think about the different volume levels which you can use and the big differences they can make to your recordings. You certainly don't want to sacrifice your vision for the recording for the sake of volume. While you do want to fall within the parameters of industry standards, you also want to give yourself as much room to create as possible. This will let you make the recording you want at a volume level that invites the listener to turn it up and have a deeper experience.
