What Justin Bieber & Odd Future Have In Common

The most interesting anecdote from The New Yorker’s recent profile of Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, came when Braun explained how he had turned “the most Googled person on the planet” into a money-making dynamo, even within an industry that seemed determined to not make any money.

It bears quoting at length:

When Braun met David Geffen, at a party a couple of years ago, he said that Geffen had one bit of advice for him: “Get out of the music business.” So Braun has been converting his twelve-person company, SB Projects, into a many-faceted organization: it now has film and TV arms (Braun recently sold a scripted show, and has reality shows in development), a publishing division, and a technology-investment unit, in addition to a label and a management company.
Bieber’s success, at least from a financial standpoint, has come as much from cross-platform branding as it has from the sale of actual music. Consider the 5 million sales of Das-Bieb’s two albums to date, versus the 50 million sales enjoyed by Adele’s similarly sized catalogue. Bieber, however, is raking in far more dough, thanks to the sale of such items as concert tickets ($83 million), feature films ($98 million) and perfume ($120 million).

As cross-platform branding turns the music industry into what is essentially a series of advertisements for other services, Bieber has found himself with some unlikely company in the business’ forefront: the Odd Future.

Like Bieber (or, to be more accurate, like Braun), the Odd Future has proven tenacious when it comes to leveraging its acclaim into non-musical pursuits. In addition to the small universe of splinter groups that have capitalized on the Odd Future brand (Domo Genesis, Mellowhype, Frank Ocean), the group has placed its name on everything from throw pillows to key chains, not to mention the infamous cat t-shirts that Tyler, the Creator has turned into a closet industry in and of themselves.

Perhaps most significantly, Odd Future has sold its image to Cartoon Network in the form of its Loiter Squad sketch comedy show.

Rappers have long harbored a talent for turning their popularity into monetary reward, but it appears that in the future, the industry as a whole will be forced to adopt a similar logic, following in the wonderfully mismatched footsteps of misters Justin and Tyler.

Fund Professional Music Projects With 5TEN15TWENTY

What is stopping artist today from releasing a professionally recorded, mixed, mastered and manufactured project? Nine out of ten times the situation is funding. The COO of Patchwerk Recording Studios, Curtis Daniel III, has started a new program to rectify this situation called 5TEN15TWENTY.

5TEN15TWENTY is a funding and recording development tool that allows artist and fans to connect and fund professional music projects.

5TEN15TWENTY enables artists to raise funding and support from their backers who wish to hear them create professionally recorded, mixed, mastered and manufactured projects.

Artists win by having one of their biggest obstacles (recording studio fees) taken care of while their project remains independent. Once all of the recording obligations are met, they are free to do as they please with their completed project.

Fans win by receiving unique rewards associated with each project and more importantly--new quality material from their favorite artists.

How 5Ten15Twenty Works

  • The artist creates a music project that they want fans to support. The project can be a single, an EP, demo, or a full-length album.
  • A fan comes to the site to view the types of projects they can support in amounts of 5, 10, 15 or 20 dollars
  • Each price point has a unique reward associated with it.
  • Once the project is funded in it’s entirety, backers will be charged. The artist will begin working on the recording project and you’ll get your reward.
Every Artist sets their project's funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers' PayPal accounts are charged when time expires.

If the project falls short, no one is charged.

YouTube Is Necessary For Your Music Business

The use of social networks is a must in today's world of music. In order to gain the most exposure it is necessary to be active on all mediums possible. The one that can make the world of difference has to be YouTube. 3 billion hours of video are watched monthly so if you aren't sharing, nobody is caring!

It matters not what your role is in the music business. A YouTube Channel is necessary!  It's free to sign up, easy to create a profile, and can share things across the world in a matter of seconds. Acts such as Justin Bieber utilize the power of YouTube to launch their careers. Check out the list of other notables who did the same thing!

If you are new to the field or just need some tips on how to get more out of the experience check out what we have listed below.

Five Tips For Sharing Success

1. Brand Your Channel
You customise your Facebook fan page, and Twitter profile. You should make sure you take the opportunity to brand your YouTube channel. Walmart is one company who’ve really taken advantage of the customisation features. Keeping a consistent brand identity across all your social media pages is a great way to make you instantly recognisable. If you’re a business or an artist, you need to stand out from the crowd. Making your channel stand out is one of the ways to do this.

2. Sharable Content
The key to YouTube success is uploading videos that people will share. Upload content that people want to see, and you’ll be able to reap the benefits. If you’re an artist, why not upload a cover of the ‘song of the moment’ to help raise your profile? If you’re selling instruments, make your promotional videos interesting. Relate them to something current, and put your own unique spin on them. Whatever your role in the music business, make sure the content you put out there is unique, exciting, and entertaining.

 3. Tag Your Videos
Like Pinterest, Flickr, and your blog; YouTube has a ‘tag’ feature, and you should be making the most of it. Make sure to tag your video with anything and everything that is relevant – including any slang terms (e.g. if your video is about a dog tag ‘pooch’ too). This will increase the visibility of your video. The more visible the video, the more likely it is to be shared. You should also make the most of the YouTube categories, placing your content in the most relevant places. This again, will help make sure the right people see your videos.

4. Regular and Consistent Updates
Social media is a great way to raise your profile, and build a fan base. But it doesn’t happen overnight. So if you’ve worked hard to build up a YouTube community, you should make an effort to regularly update the channel. You should also make an effort to reply to as many comments as you can. Obviously if you have thousands of subscribers this may be impossible. You should however, make sure you have an obvious and active presence.

5. Analyse Your Analytics
YouTube offers free analytics through its ‘insights’ feature. You can quickly and easily see loads of valuable information about every video you’ve uploaded. This includes a demographic overview of the people who’ve viewed your video, and how they found you. This will help you when it comes to creating future content so make sure you use this feature. Making Your Mark on YouTube As a music business, you really should maintain an active YouTube presence. Creating, building, and maintaining your own channel is a great way to share your content, connect with your audience, and promote your business. By following these steps, you should be able to seamlessly integrate YouTube into your current social media strategy.

Another Step Closer To CD Extinction

You knew the day was coming and for retail outlets like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc the amount of space given for CDs isn't making sense anymore.

Best Buy plans to allocate less floor space to CDs and DVDs this fall, according to a report of a Tuesday conference call with analysts. No indication was given on the treatment of new release and catalog titles in this latest reduction of CD shelf space. Said CEO Brian Dunn:

“We’ll have another store reset before the holidays, which will include an increase in the space for higher-growth and, in the aggregate, higher-margin categories, like Best Buy Mobile, e-readers and gaming, with a heavy emphasis on new gaming platforms and pre-owned game titles. This will be enabled by our reorganization of the DVD and CD sections. The CD section in particular will shrink in space allotment.”

The extra space created by shrinking CD and DVD sections will help create a space for demonstrations of new motion-controlled video games, Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move.

Best Buy had a 8.7% share of the U.S. music retail market in 2009, according to Billboard estimates, down from 10.7% in 2008. Walmart had an estimated 12.5% share in 2009, down from 15% in 2008. Both retailers have consistently reduced the CD’s footprint in their stores. (Investors.com)

WMG Celebrates 60 Years of Elektra Records

Elektra Records was created in 19-year-old Jac Holzman's dorm room at St. John's College in Maryland on Oct. 10, 1950.

The first release followed in March 1951 with an album entitled "New Songs by John Gruen." The label blurb noted that Elektra "shall continue to offer disks of unusual and worthy musical fare," and sure enough it went on to release music by Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Tim Buckley, Love, the Doors, and the Stooges. More recent signings include Bruno Mars, Laza Morgan, and Cee Lo Green.

Forty years after Warner Communications acquired Elektra and its spin-off classical label Nonesuch, WMG is marking the 60th anniversary of Elektra. The major has launched Elektra60.com, a website it says "tells the stories of the legendary artists, the music, and the culture that have defined the label over the past six decades."

The site was conceived and curated by Holzman, who currently serves as a senior advisor to Warner Music Group chairman and CEO, Edgar Bronfman, Jr. It includes a user-controlled timeline that traces the history of the company from its beginnings in 1950 to the present day, highlighting nearly 100 significant artists. Searchable by year and by artist, the timeline incorporates streaming audio, multiple images, video content, and historical information.

"Breaking from the valid and understandable anniversary traditions of the past, we decided to celebrate Elektra on the web, the connective community of our age," said Holzman in a statement. "This is a unique, ever-changing party to which everyone is invited and encouraged to participate."

Concert Sales Dwindle, Artists Cancel Tour Dates

By Salima Koroma

While the digital age and easier access to musical content has made it difficult for artists to sell their music, one bright spot has always been touring. Musicians have looked to concerts to make up for the lack of revenue streaming in from dwindling record sales. However, due to a poor economy and evolving ticket purchasing trends, even this area of monetary revenue has been threatened. Over the past few months, Rihanna, Maxwell, newly reunited Limp Bizkit, and many others have had to cancel tour dates.

Although a struggling economy is partly to blame for this, differences in consumer behavior is also a major factor according to the Wall Street Journal. Concert goers tend to wait until the last minute to buy cheaper tickets, rather than buying them earlier, for higher prices.

Live Nation Entertainment, the largest live-performance company in the industry, told WSJ that such trends are not different from the norm. "Cancellations are a part of the business and in fact the number this year is in line with past years," says Jason Garner, Chief Executive of the company's concerts division. "When 40% of tickets across the industry are going unsold, you have to have an honest talk about ticket prices."

The only musicians who seem to attract audiences despite a poor economy are artists like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. Parents tend to feel more comfortable buying tickets for their kids to these shows than they would for other concerts. However acts like the Jonas Brothers and even American Idol all-stars have faced tour cancellation due to poor ticket sales.

Music Licensing: Happy Birthday = $$$$

The song "Happy Birthday to You" is an example of just how interesting the world of licensing is. Think about this song -- it is only 6 notes. Yet it is one of the best known songs in the world. It was written in 1893 by Mildred and Patty Hill and first published with the words, "Good morning to you".

The words "Happy Birthday to You" were first seen in print in 1924, although the author is unknown. Copyright was registered in 1934 in a court case involving a musical called "As Thousands Cheer" by Irving Berlin. The Clayton F. Summy Company became the song's publisher in 1935. Through a series of purchases and acquisitions, the song now belongs to AOL Time Warner. ASCAP represents the song for public performance licensing.

The copyright to "Happy Birthday to You" should have expired in 1991, but the Copyright Act of 1976 extended it, and the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 extended it again, so the song is protected until 2030 at least.

"Happy Birthday to You" brings in about $2 million per year in licensing fees according to this article. If you ever hear the song in a movie, TV show or commercial, a licensing fee has been paid. Any manufacturer making a toy that plays the song pays a licensing fee. The manufacturer of any musical card playing the song pays a licensing fee. And so on... This 6-note song is big business!

The Battle Between Viacom & Youtube

Yesterday’s summary judgment in favor of YouTube in the ongoing lawsuit against it by Viacom has ramifications for the music industry far beyond its relationship with YouTube.

Despite music industry organizations like ASCAP, BMI and SESAC filing briefs in the case supporting Viacom’s $1 billion copyright infringement claim, the music industry has largely made peace with YouTube and works with it as close partner, as the company’s involvement in the Vevo music video service illustrates.

But it’s judge Louis Stanton’s reasoning behind granting YouTube victory in the case that, if upheld, could affect the music industry’s efforts to reign in less friendly online services that use the same defense.

WHAT THE JUDGMENT MEANS
It all comes down how the law defines the Safe Harbor clause of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which states that content hosting services can’t be sued for infringement so long as they comply with any takedown requests from rights holders. Rightsholders for years have complained that this protection places all the onus on them to constantly send in takedown notices to services that they feel should be doing more to more proactively police their networks. Yesterday’s ruling upholds that burden, even in the case of services that host as high a volume of potentially infringing content as YouTube.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE INDIES
Critics of the ruling say such collaboration works only for larger labels and rights organizations that are well staffed and better equipped to engage with YouTube and other services at a high level. Smaller labels and independent artists may have a tougher time.

"This is a terrible result for independent artists,” says attorney Chris Castle. “Google's interpretation of the DMCA creates three classes of artists: those who have the money and time to pursue notice and takedown 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, those who have some resources to send notices some of the time, and those who give up in despair.”

APPEAL COMING
While the ruling grants YouTube a victory for now, the issue is hardly resolved. Viacom has already vowed to appeal the “fundamentally flawed” ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Universal Music Group, which found itself on the losing side of a summary judgment in its similar lawsuit against video-sharing service Veoh, also is pursing an appeal.

Until these cases reach a final resolution, it’s unlikely that yesterday’s ruling will have any affect on existing digital music business models. Online services who show interest in licensing music will continue to strike deals with the labels, while those that don’t will continue to be sued. Other services have tried to use the DMCA Safe Harbor defense as a shield against label lawsuits—such as music search engine SeeqPod and video sharing service Veoh—but typically run out of money before they can fight in court and simply shut down.

Remembering Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson fans around the world lit candles on Friday (June 25) to mark the death one year ago of the controversial pop star whose posthumous popularity has returned him to a pedestal and made him a billion dollar man.

Jackson's sudden death at age 50 on June 25 last year in Los Angeles sparked an outpouring of grief internationally for the former child star, who was rehearsing for a series of concerts aimed at reviving a career shattered by bizarre events as an adult and acquittal on charges of molesting a 13-year-old boy.

One year on, Jackson is again idolized and his debts a burden of the past. The Billboard analysis shows Jackson's earnings in the past year have hit $1 billion, including album sales generating about $383 million and revenue from the film "This Is It" hitting nearly $400 million.

Michael's hometown of Gary, Indiana, matriarch Katherine Jackson will unveil a monument outside the humble house where the legendary Jackson 5 began their singing career half a century ago. A memorial and candlelight vigil will follow, ending with the song "We are the World."

Jackson's children -- Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket -- are expected to mark the anniversary privately in Gary.

The cemetery where Jackson is buried near Los Angeles will open its gates to all fans on Friday but they will not be allowed into the vast mausoleum containing his body.

The singer's estranged father Joe has helped organize a "Forever Michael" tribute at a Beverly Hills hotel on June 26 and Katherine Jackson, 80, has given the fund-raising dinner her blessing with her self-published book of personal family photographs -- "Never Can Say Good-bye" -- to be sold there.

Embattled Limewire to launch subscription music service

By Jaikumar Vijayan

After a thorough pummeling by the music industry, peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software vendor LimeWire Inc. will launch a subscription-based music service for consumers.
The service is scheduled to go live later this year and will allow users to download and stream music to laptops, smart phones and other mobile devices for a monthly fee.
Spokeswoman Tiffany Guamaccia said that what the company is launching is not just a legal version of LimeWire, as some have speculated, but a completely new service that it has been working hard on for some time now.
"Essentially, the new music service will be an ecosystem comprised of a desktop media player, mobile applications and a Web-based music experience for downloading and streaming," Guamaccia said.
The new service will have several cloud integration features including one that allow iTunes content to be synched to the cloud. The subscription service will allow users to have "complete and instant" access to music on their desktops, mobile devices and stored in the cloud.
The desktop media player will have "robust" music discovery features and will be capable of dynamically generating playlists based on user preferences, and recommendations, Guamaccia said. The media player will also include other discovery features, such as finding community editorial ratings and reviews.
News of LimeWire's planned service comes even as the company is coming under tremendous pressure from the music industry over copyright infringement issues.
Just last week, eight music publishers sued the company for enabling what they claimed was massive copyright infringement. The lawsuit was filed as a related case to another, previous lawsuit filed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) over the same issues.
Both parties have claimed that LimeWire's P2P file-sharing software has contributed to massive music piracy over the last few years. Both the RIAA and the publishers have argued that LimeWire has done little to stop problem, and has in fact, actually encouraged illegal downloads with the features in its software.
A federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, where the lawsuits have been filed, found LimeWire liable last month for enabling massive music piracy. That ruling in turn has prompted the RIAA to file separate motions asking for the company to be shuttered and for all of its assets to be frozen.
An RIAA spokeswoman offered no comment on LimeWire's subscription service plans. But she said that the RIAA would move forward with the lawsuit, and is currently waiting for a response to its motion for a permanent injunctiom against LimeWire.

The Power Of Google Alert

On a daily basis you may be spending quite some time generating publicity for yourself and don't always get to see the fruits of your labor. Maybe you have sent a few hundred press releases out to media outlets and not even a cricket is heard back. You may be amazed to know how many people are actually writing about you and giving your music rotation without you being aware. A sure fire way to know who and what press is paying attention regardless if it is a write up or album review is to utilize Google Alerts. The advantage to using Google Alerts is made evident by receiving an email any time Google indexes a new mention of your artist name or band on the web. Your settings dictate how often you will be emailed.

Google Alerts can tracks things such as:

To Download or NOT To Download?

My ears are constantly bombarded with people freely stating, “I don’t buy CDs, but I’ll download it”, or my favorite “ I haven’t bought a CD since 19 BLAH, BLAH, BLAH”! So ask yourself this question: How would you feel if someone broke into your house, borrowed a pair of shoes, wore them for a while, let some friends borrow them, and then returned them when they were of no longer good use to them? That’s what you just did to these artists, musicians, entertainers, label executives, and not to mention their families. Sure we think they have lots of money, I don’t need to buy their CD. WRONG!!! Artists especially!

People don’t realize, in the music business the artist is the last to get paid. After they pay back recording time which can be a few thousand dollars per session, paying all the producers, videos, engineers, and etc; if the artist does not go at least multi-platinum or go on a tour, they aren’t going to have much for themselves. So ask yourself, how hard is it to go “multi-platinum” when everyone is downloading your work? The hard work, efforts, countless late nights, to put together a body of work to represent you is given away shamelessly for free.

Additionally, by downloading free music, you’re also ruining potential business for the up and coming artists. If record labels are so strapped for cash it becomes difficult for them to invest in new artists that may not necessarily give them as much money but is still an artist that needs to be heard. Everyone complains as to why is it all we hear is “bubble gum” music? If people are constantly downloading music for free, which is taking money from the labels and artists, how can a record label afford to back an artist with true talent if they can’t fund them? “Bubble gum” music, being that majorities are funding it, whether it is with CD purchases, downloads, or ringtones, is keeping the music business afloat for now.

File sharing services such as Limewire, have done irreparable damage to an industry we all need. Hundreds of millions and possibly even billions of dollars have been taken out of the hands and wallets of thousands of people. All injustices such as this one are just another way that people in the world set themselves back in life for a mere convenience. So next time before you press, “DOWNLOAD NOW”, think about it.

I dO MUSIC

By Daniel Kreps

Kanye West has went in again as the rapper returned with the explosive new track "Power." The song, reportedly the first single from his highly-anticipated fifth album Good Ass Job, reunites Kanye with Dwele, the soul singer who provided the hook to West's "Flashing Lights." Nah Right reports that Symbolyc One produced the cut, which carves an unexpected sample out of King Crimson's prog-rock classic "21st Century Schizoid Man." After taking a slight detour to drum machines and melancholy synths on 2008's 808s and Heartbreak, Kanye's latest finds the rapper returning to the sped-up samples and militaristic beats that helped his first three albums go platinum.

West has chosen to step out of the spotlight the past nine months after his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Music Awards, with West pledging to get his act together and focus on creating music instead of making headlines for his behavior. The Swift incident was mocked by Saturday Night Live and on "Power" West responds to the skit with vitriol. "Fuck SNL and the whole cast," he spits. "Tell ‘em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass."

The release of "Power" comes days after reports that West debuted four Good Ass Job tracks at a New York City nightclub. While Kanye UniverseCity or Kanye West's new blog don't make mention of the song, the Kanye Live fan site reports that the track will hit iTunes on June 8th, which is also Kanye's birthday. That same day in Chicago, West is reportedly set to debut the track live during the Loop Dreams benefit concert. Good Ass Job is expected out this fall.
