DUDE... R U SERIOUS!?!?

OK - I SERIOUSLY think it's time for us to have a little HEART 2 HEART... (this one is personal!)

I know you get our emails with music tips, advice, and all that good stuff all the time but we seriously need you to understand what all this "I dO Music" stuff is REEAALLY about! Personally, from real musician to real musician, if I came across an "I dO Music" flyer on my way to work one day... or on facebook... and it looked even a little credible... there is NO WAY I wouldn't pick it up and check it out because I'M REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT THE FACT THAT I DO MUSIC and I wouldn't miss any opportunity to be around anything that has to do with it!!!!!

So when we tell you that you should come to this event or go to the website... it shouldn't be about Greg Street or DJ Don Cannon on the panel, nor should it be about the fact that some celebrity artist or big-wig Label A&R is going to be there...

IT SHOULD be about the fact that you get to be around a couple hundred people that feel exactly the same way you feel about MUSIC!!! Mostly everyone that comes to "I dO Music" is just as passionate and excited about their music career as YOU! AND THEY'RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE AS HARD WORKING AS YOU TO GET TOGETHER WITH ON THEIR JOURNEY TO THE TOP! So whether you're a song writer, producer, artists, engineer, manager, or entrepreneur--->THIS should be the #1 reason you come to the event EVERY MONTH!!! PERIOD!... THE QUESTION IS... ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Are You...

RT 2 Buy Your Music – Getting Paid Through Twitter

As I described in my previous post, “Subscribe To My…..Mixtape?”, RSS feeds are the wave of the future for delivering and receiving content. I stated that a future scenario for music would entail fans subscribing to your music through feeds. Microblogs are the new social media trend at the current moment. Through real time streams such as Facebook, Jaiku, Plaxo, and Twitter, everyone is partaking in the “What am I doing now?” craze. Though there are infinite sites that cater to this the most popular is without a doubt – Twitter. Twitter is the main attraction all over the world, grabbing attention from high profile celebrities, corporations and venture capitalist. On a communal level, I’m beginning to see more artists use Twitter as a means of engaging with their audience and promoting their music. Subscribing to my content is one thing, but what about selling my content through RSS feeds? Twitpay, a platform that allows recipients to send small payments through Twitter, has introduced a new way to sell your content through Twitter called RT2Buy. If you’re a Twitter fanatic, you’ve probably already guessed that “RT” stands for “ReTweet”. The process for buying and selling content is simple: When you see someone post an RT2Buy tweet, click the link and check out the preview. If you like it, just retweet it, and Twitpay delivers the content. As an artist, with RT2Buy you’re able to promote, advertise and sell your content directly to your Twitter following. This cuts out the task of trying to lure your fans to your website to listen or to buy your music. As the web becomes more intelligent, sites such as Twitpay and RT2Buy will evolve and make it even more convienient for music entrepreneurs.

Changing the Economics of How the Game Is Played

The well-known quote from Ghandi rings true in my head as I dwell on the theme for this post – “You must become the change you wish to see in the world.” The call for change resonated with the election of President Obama and the people took to heart the message. In order to see change, we must be willing to embrace the challenges that lie ahead and accept our responsibilities. Within the music community, there’s a strong cry for change. From asking for more support from the music fans to wanting more quality and substance from music artists and demanding better treatment and fairness from record labels. Being that the music artist is the central figure in the overall scheme of things, let’s concentrate on the need for creativity, quality and substance. I was reading a post by Tim Feriss, author of the book, “The 4-Hour Workweek”, entitled, “Start-up Strategy: To Change the Game, Change the Economics of How It’s Played”. Within the post he references a book entitled, “Rules of Thumb” by Alan Webber and the significance of changing the economics of how the game is played. He mentions Jerry Garcia, manager for the Grateful Dead and how he created the first social network in the seventies. His principle: “You do not merely want to be considered just the best of the best. You want to be considered the only ones who do what you do,” earned him the position as one of the top management gurus of all time. At the time, (and it’s still relevant today), you weren’t allowed to take photos or record live performances. The Grateful Dead’s strategy allowed fans to take photos, record live performances and bootleg their material. The Grateful Dead isn’t known for selling records, but they are known for their massive following of dedicated fans. The band made their money from selling merchandise. Giving their fans permission to share live recordings and photos put them in a category by themselves. I’m not writing this post to say we need to adopt the “give your music away for free” model. I made clear that that trend is dead in my previous post. What I’m saying is that we need to think beyond trying to be the best and figure out how we can change the economics of the music industry. As Murs said on his latest album, “Murs For President”, the "Time Is Now" for us to change the way we perceive music. We need not depend on the traditional way of doing things. As we can see, the music empire of the past is falling. After you finish reading this post, think of ways you can be considered “the only ones who do what you do.”

Grind With Purpose

A friend of mine recently posted a public service announcement on the almighty Twitter that read "...rejection is difficult for anyone, but without disappointment you don't grow..." As a member of the ever-growing entertainment industry, I have often heard and over heard the phrase, “I'm on my grind…” which prompted me to examine what that really means. The dictionary definitions are: 1. to wear, smooth, or sharpen by abrasion or friction 2. to reduce to fine particles, as by pounding or crushing 3. to produce by crushing or abrasion Normally, it isn’t until we’ve face some type of adversity and rejection that we are back on the grind. If someone says no that doesn't mean they're “tryna play you,” maybe you're grind isn't right for the opportunity. You may have another opportunity depending on how you choose to respond to the initial feedback. But, it's about stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing things to really make the situation crack, not remaining ignorant, but creating a plan. Without direction, there can be no lesson learned from the trials and tribulations. The thing is that people want what they want and if you get it right away, you'll never grow and you'll never know. Some of the best inventions have come in the face of adversity; you don't know you can do it until you're forced to. The real geniuses force themselves to do things without being forced to. When the grind is your reality then it’s about expanding it and taking it global. -Worldfamous G-Mack

Subscribe To My.....Mixtape?

In the beginning there were newspaper subscriptions. Afterwards came the magazine subscription. As the internet found its place in society and email became the source of information, people began to subscribe to newsletters. Currently, society subscribes to RSS feeds to receive content from blogs, podcasts and/or videocasts. The ease of distributing information on a global scale is what makes the Information Age defiant. With music and the transition into the Digital Age, the ease of distributing music on a global scale has the same impact and affect. Are music subscriptions the next big trend? Music strategists and industry leaders have been debating for quite some time about music subscriptions and how that could be an alternative and a possible solution to offset P2P file sharing. We see Bittorent sites such as Napster, digital music stores such as Rhapsody and mobile phone service providers such as Nokia, offering a monthly subscription for a limited amount of music downloads. Taking it a step further, what about music labels and artists bundling their music, other media and merchandise in a package and offering it as a subscription to their fans? Imagine that you’re a rapper with a strong following of dedicated fans. You’ve taken the time to build a quality brand and your journey in the music industry is both fascinating and bizarre. Not only are you releasing mixtapes on a bi-monthly basis, but you have rare video footage of studio sessions with some well known producers and artists working on your anticipated debut album release, interviews overseas and you have merchandise that’s in high demand. Building and sustaining that anticipation for your debut album release, you can bundle all of those elements into one package and tell your fans, “For 6 months, if you subscribe to my package, you will receive 3 mixtapes, rare video footage of studio sessions and interviews and merchandise. At the end of the 6 months, you will receive a free copy of my highly anticipated CD. All you would have to pay is “X” amount of dollars to have access.” Being that you have an established brand and a strong and dedicated following, you could possibly reap more benefits from this subscription based model than hoping to sell a million records when the album is released. This is one way to use the current trends to your advantage. Trent Reznor, front man for Nine Inch Nails, is experimenting and using these models to his advantage; why can’t you? In the future, after you’ve built your brand, don’t ask your fans to buy your mixtape, simply tell them, “Subscribe to my mixtape”.

Music is like CAKE... only as good as the MIX!!!

Yeah Yeah, my little analogy was a bit corny and a little dry but there is so much truth in that statement! In this day and age when every "so called" producer owns a "bootlegged" copy of Digital Audio Workstations like Reasons and Fruity Loops it is absolutely imperative that you invest in making your records stand out sonically. I'm certainly not bashing the credibility of programs such as the aforementioned; they're all great music production programs with advantages in their own right. However, although these programs allow any "joe-producer" the ability to mix their own music I would highly suggest that you re-think that popular "Do-it-Yourself" mentality when you get to this stage in your creative process. If you are serious - that is if you want to make money from your creations - then I am proposing to you that the only way you are going to be able to compete with records that are made by already established producers and artists is by taking your records serious and investing in a real mix by a real professional at a real studio such as PatchWerk... (**shameless plug**)

Think about this... What happens when Lil' Wayne is going through beats for his next album and your beat (that you mixed yourself) comes on right after a Timbaland beat (that was mixed by a professional that he most likely paid a couple thousand dollars to tweak it until it was just right)
... you got it ---> SKIP!!!

Although it's not common knowledge, Audio Engineering is a very meticulous and technical trade. Any credible Audio engineer would often times tell new producers and engineers "I studied this stuff for yeeeaarrss... and I'm still learning new things that make me good at what I do. What makes you think you can just up and mix a good record??" Actually it makes sense... anyone can make drums knock, or turn the highs up on their EQ plugin... but it takes a professional to make a record sound really good. Think about this... how often do serious musicians skip the mastering process or try to do it themselves?!?! The answer to that question is rarely! Why? Because the perception is that mastering takes a specific set of expensive (and not readily available) equipment and a specific set of skills that it takes a lot of time time to hone. Well I'm suggesting that the same rule applies to the mixing process. How can you think that a record mixed by you can compete with one mixed by world class mix engineers Leslie Brathwaite or Phil Tan. That's just not smart...

As the saying goes... "You get what you pay for". So yes, cutting cost by mixing your beats and songs on your own will save you some extra cash... but at the expense of producing a "sonically superior" and competitive record. Getting your music mixed can be the only thing missing between you and a major placement or a record deal. The fact of the matter is if you won't invest in yourself... no one will!

Free Is Dead!

After Radiohead, NIN and Saul Williams introduced and reaped the benefits from allowing fans to download their albums for free, the music industry embraced this trend and the “free” or “pay-what-you-want” model became the standard. Overnight, artists felt that giving their fans what they wanted would be more valuable than making a profit from their albums. Two years after the “free” pandemic, industry leaders such as Seth Godin and Kate Bradley are beginning to question the effectiveness of the “free” model. The market is already oversaturated with new acts. To add to the matter, majority of the new acts are giving away their music for free and performing live for free. In their eyes, free giveaways and free performances equal more attention and more publicity. This is true; however, what they fail to realize is, if everyone around you is using the same technique for the same reason, before long, you will have to compete for attention. What does this mean? Artists will have to find creative ways to add more value to their “free” package to attract more attention. Or, artists can become more creative and add more value to their music to attract more fans to purchase their albums, tickets for their performances and merchandise. At the end of the day, supply and demand reigns supreme. The supply of “free” music is high while the demand for it is decreasing. The supply of “quality” music is low and the demand for it is increasing. Before you begin recording and mixing your album on Garageband or Audacity (free recording software), pressing up copies on your desktop or laptop for free and handing out free copies at your free concert, think about effectiveness, the strategy and the quality behind your “free” campaign. When Nas claimed “Hip Hop Is Dead”, I understood the underlying meaning behind his statement that we need to be more creative and bring quality to the art form. My words may not have the same impact, but I take the same approach by saying “Free Is Dead”.

Your Personal Tour & Promotions Guide

How familiar are you with the Billboard's Musicians Guide to Tour & Promotions? Well while in the bookstore I caught the magazine that holds a plethora of information if your a musician. The Billboard's Musicians Guide to Tour & Promotion is your answer to obtaining exposure and income in different markets of the country. If your an independent artist or manage artist and you don't have this magazine please stop and think about why. The information is clear as day.

The guide acts as a complete directory of Music Industry Contacts: Disk & Tape Services, Bus & Van Rentals, Radio Stations, Record Stores, Agents, Attorneys, A&R, Managers, Showcases, Clubs, Conferences, Tour Managers, Publications and Web Sites. Perhaps your in a band but don't have a buzz. Maybe you would like to get gigs and get your music heard but don't have a clear plan. Sometimes we are just too lazy to look some of this information up. Well this guide neatly categorizes all you need. On a weekly basis I get calls from various people wanting to know where they can perform and if I have any leads. Don't limit yourself to being local. No disrespect but if you have a calendar on your social network page and it is totally filled with performing at the same venue every week, go pick this magazine up please! Take your show on the road and see how others respond to the music.

Don't let a inconsistent manager or anyone for that matter put restraints on your career. Guides and other books are sitting on the shelf with info for you to soak up. If your reading this and haven't already left to hit your local bookstore then you must be on the road to success and don't need assistance. Either that or you must be attending I dO MUSIC monthly to get the information. Whatever you decide make it happen!

Younger Crowd Digging Vinyl

In the age where MP3s and iPods have become the dominant musical formats, 33s, 45s and turntables are in the midst of a renaissance. Vinyl is back. The old medium is attracting new crowds for a variety of reasons. Some people like the physical experience of holding a record, others argue that music played with a needle sounds crisper, and some see it as a countercultural revolution against digital music. “Vinyl is the new CD,” said Walter Quadrato, who has run Brass City Records off Meadow Street for more than 25 years. Quadrato said customers are looking for something tangible, and records are providing that outlet. While he hasn’t seen flocks of newcomers to his store, he said there have been a few curious younger customers who want to dig through cardboard boxes looking for Beatles and Pink Floyd albums. “It’s fun to play records. We get to flip it over, we get to look at the liner notes and it’s more like a piece of art,” he said. “You have to be more involved, it’s more active listening than listening to your iPod. You have to do something to enjoy it.” Vinyl records are again appearing everywhere from retail chains like Best Buy and Target to smaller independent record stores. Independent labels had frequently pressed their artists’ newest albums on vinyl, even after many considered the format dead, but today even major record labels are recognizing the shift. Capitol Records has reissued British rockers Radiohead’s “OK Computer” on vinyl as well as The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds.” Bruce Springsteen’s latest album, “Working on a Dream” can also be found as a record. The prices for the new albums can range from as little as $10 to more than $50, depending on whether the album contains extra gatefold-style artwork or is pressed on superior 180-gram vinyl. Rick Sinkiewicz, co-owner of Redscroll Records in Wallingford, has noticed the shift. He said that when the store first opened two years ago, about 30 percent of its sales were in records, with the remaining 70 percent in CDs. That trend has reversed, and the store’s shelves have expanded into a former backroom office, which is now full of used AC/DC and David Bowie records, among others. While staunch record advocates have argued for years that CDs dampen an album’s potentially rich sound, Sinkiewicz said vinyl-lovers have also embraced the digital age to a certain extent. “With coming of the Information Age, there’s also the rejection of the Information Age,” Sinkiewicz said. “MP3s are popular, but what satisfaction can you get from that? Getting the album with the MP3 is awesome, and that’s what a lot of the new releases are doing. That, or you’re given a CD with the record.” Despite the surge in record interest and a 14 percent drop in CD and digital album sales, digital remains the dominant sales format, with more than 428 million units sold in 2008, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Vinyl sales climbed close to 89 percent in 2008, up from slightly under 1 million to 1.8 million. In the midst of the economic recession, Insound.com, an online music retailer, experienced its best sales month ever in December. Patrick McNamara, general manager for Insound, said a majority of the Web site’s customers are between 23 and 30 years old, a group that for the most part didn’t grow up listening to records. “It’s been really crazy,” McNamara said. “There’s been almost too much demand and not enough supply. Some of the vinyl pressing plants are backlogged. It’s definitely not just for older people looking to get in touch with their youth anymore.” ——

U.S. Music Festivals You need to Check Out

BONNAROO, Tennessee, U.S.
June 11-14 ($235)

The word "bonnaroo" is New Orleans slang for "the best on the streets," and the Bonnaroo festival has grown into that name over the past eight years, winning Rolling Stone magazine's "Best Festival" award in 2008. In addition to promoting mainstream and independent rock, hip-hop, and electronic groups, Bonnaroo also features a stand-up comedians' tent and a "silent disco" tent -- where everyone gets a pair of headphones that sync up with the music for late night dancing without the noise complaints. Over 80,000 people will head to the festival outside of Nashville to see headliners including Bruce Springsteen, Phish, and Snoop Dogg.

LOLLAPALOOZA, Chicago, U.S.
August 7-9 ($190)

Rocker Perry Farrell began Lollapalooza in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band, Jane's Addiction. The biggest grunge rock festival during the nineties disappeared for awhile around the turn of the century, but it was revived in 2005 as a more traditional "big weekend" destination festival in Chicago. The past few years at Grant Park have been marked by hot summers, huge crowds, and even bigger bands. The anticipated crowd of nearly 200,000 is staggering, as are this year's headliners: Kings of Leon, Tool, Depeche Mode, and Beastie Boys, just to name a few.
