OBAMA GOOD FOR THE BIZ??

When Obama becomes our president next week, labels will rejoice. The man next to the man, Senator Joseph Biden is all about protecting intellectual property. The entertainment industry will pop bottles immediately.

He has urged the Justice department to attack the file sharers, proactive in making life miserable for Internet and satellite radio broadcasters. In fact, we also learn that Biden was a key supporter of legislation that inspired the creation of the encryption software PGP(Pretty Good Privacy). PGP is often used for signing, encrypting and decrypting e-mails to increase the security of e-mail communications.

Biden's new bill would make it a federal felony to try and trick certain types of devices into playing your music or running your computer program.

Biden's proposed additions to copyright law come as Congress is under increasing pressure. In the last few weeks, Hollywood and the music industry have stepped up their demands for more authority to cease and desist digital piracy. Backing a new bill to allow hacking of peer-to-peer networks, trying to limit Americans' rights to record TV and radio broadcasts, and predicting even more legislation in the next few months.

Merely creating a fake watermark or digital signature would not be illegal, but "trafficking" in it or redistributing the file would. Please understand its real folks! In addition to criminal penalties, the bill permits a company whose watermark or digital signature was used to sue for damages "of not less than $2,500 or not more than $25,000, as the court considers appropriate, reports cnet.com.

Consumers soon will be offered more and more hardware devices that rely on electronic watermarks, digital signatures, or other cryptographic means to thwart piracy and improve security.

I say to you good people....beware! Piracy is coming to an end!!!!!!

C-ya at the voting poll next week!

Utilize Merchandise

How do you generate your dollars from your music besides the cd, ringtone, and digital download? Welcome to the world of merchandising. The selling of merch at your shows is the lifeline for many indie as well as major artist. Even though multi-million dollar album and concert sales are certainly the business from a gross figure perspective, many artist only receive about a dollar per cd from sales. The biggest profit piece of the economic pizza is in the merchandise itself. For every $25 standard tour t-shirt sold, as much as $10 per t-shirt may go to the artist directly.

The toy companies jumping on the next wave of marketing superstar artist as well. You have seen dolls in the past such as the Spice Girls, Ghostface Killah, Biz Markie, Beyonce, Britney Spears and a cast of others. Keep in mind when looking to crossover your music to other products: talent and record sales don't mean commercial product success. Solely depends on how your fans simply like you.

Develop sayings that go along with your records. How simple was Rocko's theme of "Umma Do Me"? Have a few hundred shirts pressed up and now you have your movement along with dollars off your simple sayings. Also a great way to keep yourself relevant when you don't have a a single out. The fan will always be your walking campaign! Switch it up a lil though because nobody likes to look at the same old t shirts.
Just something to consider when creating your next single folks!

Still Grinding!

What's up folks? I really hope you all are making the steps towards you goals because your competitors defently are! I went out the other night (Which I rarely do) and decided to check out a concert, when I ran into Percee P. Now all my hip-hop heads may know this guy, I mean he has been in the game since 1981!...No lie! Not only that but he is also signed with the popular indie lable Stonesthrow (JDilla,Madlib,MF Doom, and others). I respect this guy because he is out there werking it! He is signed to a indie label, but I actually saw this man go through the crowd selling his own CD's to the people. Now we all may frown upon the hustler, but you have to respect a person who is signed and has fans....WORLDWIDE, but also decides to get in touch with his fans by selling his own product after the show. Sure, this isn't the only way to get to your fans, but this is just a way to show you that the process never stops! Even if you got to your goal you have to take the necessary steps to remain at the top.

Getting Ahead and Staying Ahead

Getting ahead Sounds obvious, right? But this rule is at the top of the list for good reason. You may be getting involved in the music business because you love music, but a lot of people flock to the business because they think it's just a non stop party. While there are certainly plenty of opportunities to have fun when you're working in music, but the key word here is WERKING. Getting to the good stuff requires hard work and commitment. When you have a job to do, show up on time, and do it. Show people that you can be counted on to work hard and you know the difference between work and play, and you'll find doors swinging open.

Rules in staying aheadSay

  1. "I Don't Know" (if you don't know figure it out or ask someone don't sit there after a day and still don't know)

  2. Don't Be Afraid to Make Some Money (Money is time and time is money)

  3. Don't Be Afraid to Ask (if you don't ask you never will know the answer)

  4. Get it in writing (contracts)

  5. Above All Else – LISTEN (Please!)

Global Grind

The Global Grind is a new start page offering, that is specifically for the world of hip-hop and music. The site is currently in private beta. I got a chance to take it for a spin.The layout and design of Global Grind is very much like Pageflakes or Netvibes, though instead of one default tab offered to give you a running start with the service, there are several. Each tab further filters web content to give you separate sections for gossip, music, news, sports, rap beef, etc. There is the ability to create your own tab as well. Most of the content comes from feeds, which you can choose from those the Global Grind has already chosen, or add your own. There are also "grinds" which are widgets, and include things like Google Maps, Flickr photo search and Yahoo music search. There doesn't yet seem to be the ability to add your own "grind" widget, so that's one thing I'm hoping to see in the future. One helpful thing the Global Grind has done is offer the option for the content to be viewed in an iFrame so you don't have to leave the service or open links in new windows. This is becoming a new movement that gives music, news and information in the world of hip hop. ~Craig u.~

To be thyself or to be sheep

All over the industry I observe. As I observe I fail to understand why indie artist in particular go with the flow of the game. Sure we have heads like Kayne West and Andre 3000 who "go all out" as far as image and music are concerned; however, how many can we count for the lack of creativity one could possess? A word simply put is sheep. There is nothing new under the sun, but how many people will jeopardize their musical ability just to follow a trend? I commend those who experiment and take their sound to the limit. I respect those who perform in Scooby Doo flip flops (Shout out Flyy Academy).Remember this is not a diss blog and not used to criticize anyone because we are all here for a reason, but what happened to the originality? Go all out! Who said you can't collab with a polka band! Go all Out! When you turn on the radio today, think to yourself! How can I challenge that song? Now I'm not saying that you should make a diss track towards Plies,all I am saying is how are you going to make that slot in replace of that particular song?You can go to all the different panels and conferences and they will tell you that: THE LABELS ONLY BUY ORIGINALITY! So keep werking!!

3 woman who are Fearless, Sol-Angels and In The Spotlight

These 3 ladies have brought R&B out of a long drought over this summer from albums that really did not impress me (and I usually know which albums to buy). Since I feel as though these albums are the best of the best female R&B cd’s this fall, I thought I should tell you a little bit about them to sway you in buying them.

Jazmine Sullivan

Up to the moment when Fearless was released, it was not easy to figure out which path Jazmine Sullivan would take. Jive had spent three years trying to figure it but ended up dropping her before any material officially surfaced. She co-wrote club hit ("Say I") for Christina Milian. She has also recorded with Kindred the Family Soul, Fantasia, Beyonce, and Andre 3000. She has also contributed adult-oriented R&B tracks to a handful of low-key compilations. Signed to J, she notched a number one R&B/hip-hop single with "Need U Bad." Was she a pop songwriter, a young member of the "grown folks R&B" division, or a young Lauryn Hill? On pass songwriting projects, it seemed like she was trying out a number of styles to find some footing, but with Fearless, it is clear she is comfortable in each mode. Within the span of 45 minutes, Sullivan switches between a number of tacks, both stylistically and emotionally, each one with conviction, and not just for the sake of variety. The orchestral backdrop of "Bust Your Windows" and the bold in your face "Call Me Guilty," she's clear about not being the one to cross without expecting payback, whether it results in property damage or self-defense bloodshed.
"Dream Big," a swallow-you-whole four-four thumper, is an ambitious motivational anthem. Salaam Remi connects the hook from Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her" to Anne Dudley's piano outro from the Art of Noise's "Beatbox," the album's most clever production trick). Some tracks are throwbacks through and through, like the peppy "One Night Stand" (where she fronts a girl group) and the aching "In Love with Another Man" (a tear-the-house-down ballad). There's a lot of range on display here, and there is just as much depth.

Solange Knowel s

Solange Knowle is a girl that marches to the beat of a slightly different drummer, she definitely doesn’t have much use for the traditional pop-R&B formula that so many artists, including her sister have used to propel themselves to stardom. And for that, she gets major props. SoL Angel, is by no means a masterpiece, but it’s definitely a creative, outside-the-box collection of songs. On her sophomore set, Solange not only takes on a sound that differs from her pop-driven 2002 debut, but demonstrates she has no problems about sharing personal experiences. The breakup song “Valentine’s Day,” on which she gloomily sings, “I sure wish we made it till Valentine’s Day”; the regretful “T.O.N.Y.,” about a one-night stand; and the SoulShock & Karlin-produced “SandCastle Disco,” which finds her lightheartedly warning her Casanova not to break her heart, all demonstrate Solange’s frank approach. Elsewhere, the Bilal-penned, electronica-inspired “Cosmic Journey” and the ’70s-drenched, Pharrell-produced lead single The Supremes-inspired “I Decided” and its funky remix by the Freemasons, plus 6 O’Clock Blues produced by Mark Ronson further support the eclectic sound.Pharrell Williams, Mark Ronson and the Freemasons aren’t the only big names on the album either. Solange has really gone to town bringing together a wealth of producing, writing, and recording talent to complement her own including Lamont Dozier, Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo Green, Lil’ Wayne, and Q-Tip. As well as playing with Motown grooves, Solange makes an excursion into ambient electronics on a few tracks. And while Cosmic Journey would be fine if the trip were half the length, Solange is definitely at her best when putting a modern spin on sounds from the 60s and 70s.A solid album which you’ll enjoy more with each listening, SoL-AngeL might just have you asking,”Beyoncé who?”

Jennifer Hudson

If you were one of the people wondering if Jennifer Hudson could sustain her
vocal energy, power and passion on a full album like she did in the role of Effie in the movie Dreamgirls and like she also does on the album's opening song and first single, "Spotlight," then wonder no more: the answer's a definite yes. "Spotlight" exemplifies the album as a whole: it's got a strong, independent woman singing strongly about love and relationships. Jen displays that kind of emotion throughout the album, and it helps to balance things out, since there's also a number of sophisticated ballads on the album, such as grateful, loving "You Pulled Me Through" and the Gospel track "Jesus Promised Me a Home Over There." Another example of her boldness is the song "Pocketbook," featuring a strong guest appearance by Ludacris. On the song, Jen threatens to put the smackdown on a very randy Luda while he raps funny, suggestive lyrics like "I know magic - poof! - do away with your clothes, then c'mere and let Luda give your body a rub 'cause damn, lil' mama you thick as a mug.” Jennifer's delicious duet with former "American Idol" winner Fantasia, a duet that you know just had to happen eventually. The song, called "I'm His Only Woman," builds around a phone conversation where the two singers argue over an apparently two-timing man. "If this was 10 years ago, I'd be at your front door ready to whup yo' ass," Jennifer says to Fantasia before the singing even begins. The track is a sort of a cross between an old Whitney Houston/Debroah Cox "Same script different Cast and an updated version of the '90s Brandy/Monica track "The Boy is Mine." Another duet on the album that stands up fairly well is "I'm His Only Woman," but it's no fault of Jennifer's. The song features the "singer" T-Pain, who manages to keep up with Jennifer's vocal fireworks only by way of a talk box. Jennifer Hudson generally well-sung and well-produced and is without a doubt one of the strongest R&B albums of 2008 as well as the other ladies.

The Best Keyboards

Want to be at the top of the line of all your music playing and music producing buddies? Then go out and cop yourself a top of the line keyboard. Which one you say? How about a Krog Triton, Yamaha Motif or Roland XP? Producertips.blogspt.com explains why these keyboards are the keyboards of choice for professionals in the game… read more below…

“Korg Tritons, Yamaha Motifs, and the Roland XP's. These range anywhere from $1000 into the thousands of dollars. You can get them with fully weighted keys, so its just like your playing a real piano, in 88 keys as well. These are what all of the big producers use, neptunes, timberland etc. They are the ones you see on stage at concerts all of the time. They have thousands of sounds on them and the sounds are amazing and life like. These can also be used as samples and sequencers. Some are a whole workstation in themselves and that's all you need from start to finish.” -

Digital Distribution may not be all it’s cracked up to be

“We’re going Digitaaal. Di-di-di-gitaaaal.. That’s right! Everyone is trying to jump on the speedy, convenient bandwagon that is the internet. And in the music industry, people are seemingly moving quicker than the rest. But is Digital Distribution really all it’s cracked up to be?? Well, you be the judge….Check out some of the pros and cons of going digital listed below:

PROS

Digital = Direct sales

Without the need for physical manufacturing, distribution or stocking, digitally distributed products involve fewer middle men, and by doing so can return a far larger portion of their price to their creators.

Digital = Global availability

Any one person with an Internet connection will be able to purchase and obtain a digital copy easily. All while reducing or removing delivery cost, and traditional waiting time.

Digital = Back Catalogs

Digital products do not need to be mass produced to stock retail shelves. With a single original copy, the publisher and developer can quickly duplicate copies to meet demands. This can greatly cut down on the cost of maintaining back catalogs.

CONS

Digital = Loss of publisher support

There are drawbacks of an independent approach, mainly the loss of publisher funding. The loss of advertising is another issue that stems from the dropping of publishers.

Digital = Difficult Rights Management

Digital work is easy to duplicate without any loss of quality and with the direct nature and lower prices of online distribution, piracy has a far greater impact than it does for traditional media.

Digital = Proof of Purchase Troubles

Proof of Purchase laws were not created with short-lived products in mind. This has led to many difficult legal problems for digital distributors, relating to refunds and returns, sales themselves, and the transfer of product ownership.
