The Best Ways To Expose Your Music?

What's the best way to get people to listen to your music? For her Monitor Mix blog, Carrie Brownstein at NPR posed the question to a group of industry folks -- musicians, label owners, managers, record store owners, journalists and others. The responses are short on actionable tactics and long on larger issues, but two interrelated themes emerge.

First, word of mouth is a main driver of awareness. Even people knee-deep in music rely on recommendations of friends. Second, people believe good music will eventually be discovered.

A few of the common answers could easily be taken to heart. Make something new and/or unusual. Offer free MP3s at your Web site. Make a great/different/intriguing video.

But the major themes in the responses reveal how difficult it is to reach industry tastemakers.

-- Make Great Music. This is akin to Topspin's advice, "Don't suck." Unfortunately, sucking tends to be out of the hands of the artist. But let's be honest. Artists are going to release music regardless of their level of talent. Barriers to entry have been lowered to a point where anybody -- from the least sucking to the most-sucking artists -- can commercially release digital music. Listeners, on the other hand, weed out the good from the bad in a variety of ways. If quality is distributed normally (and that's a fair assumption given the large number of artists, releases and levels of quality in the marketplace) then only a small number of artists will be able to catch the ear of tastemakers.

-- Play Shows. This is where music discovery takes an unexpected turn. Rather than telling a young band it should reach new fans through cost-efficient Internet tools, some people say the best way to get their attention is to physically go to where they live and perform. In most cases, that means playing in a small number of cities where labels, media and fans tend to congregate. Good news for bands within short driving distance, bad news for those unable or unwilling to bear the time and expense of going on the road as an opening band in small clubs. For the latter group, however, there are events like SXSW and CMJ with tens of thousands of tastemakers in one concentrated area - if they can stand out from the thousands of other bands.

-- Be Able to Influence Word of Mouth. That means an artist needs to be liked by the person who tells friends about bands. One wonders if the question should have been, "Since you like to outsource your music discovery, what's the best way to get your friends to hear my band?" Telling an artist to create word of mouth is like telling him/her to create great music. The music tends to be what creates the word of mouth. Assuming quality is held constant, the only actionable advice here is for an artist to enable easy sharing. In other words, allow fans to share emails, video links, Tweets, blog posts and downloads. Once an artist grants that power to its fans, there's nothing left but hope the fans can influence others.

-- Get Media Coverage. Here's where the low barriers to entry run into the ugly reality that gatekeepers still exist. Telling a band to get media coverage is the same as telling it to get a publcist. Getting a review in a music publication usually - but not always - requires a publicist. Yes, gatekeepers still matter. We're often told they don't matter, that in order to gain visibility all a band needs are a few links from respected music bloggers. That's the democratization of the Internet at work. But since music blogs are gatekeepers, too, publicists have the inside on them, as well.

Jay-Z, Will and Jada Give Life to an Unknown Musical Great

You never know when your time will come! That's most definitely true for Nigerian Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Kuti has been held by many, "...as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century," yet his sounds went unheard to many of us warped by whatever popular culture is feeding us at the time.

Thanks to the support of powerhouses like Jay-Z, Will and Jada Smith, Kuti's work will be featured in a new Broadway musical, "Fela!" opening Nov. 23. Although Kuti himself passed away years ago and will be unable to see this grand homage to the music he created, his fans, loyal, and new, will be able to witness this deserving musical genius finally receive the recognition he's always deserved.

The moral: Let your music speak for itself! Your big break may not come when you want it, but with patience and preparation you'll receive a reward even bigger than what your imagination has already cooked up. Leaders continue to walk, always facing forward, never looking back. After while, you'll hear your followers lining up behind you.

On another note, musicals are a major way to reach audiences on a grand scale and not a bad idea for any musician unafraid to venture into new arenas. There is a TON of money in musical theater. (Don't let the high kicks and glitter fool you.) Google 'musical theater scores' or 'film scores' to learn more about making your music the soundtrack to the next hit stage play or film. Visit your local theater or connect with up-and-coming film makers (who are usually working on independent films.) Kuti's influence is growing beyond the grave. You're alive and breathing. What's you excuse?

~~~~~~~~~~
Jay-Z, Will Smith Put Money On 'Fela!'
Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have officially signed on as co-producers of "Fela!," a new musical about Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti opening Nov. 23 on Broadway. The news confirms weeks of speculation that the three would back the show.
Although a rep for "Fela!" did not say how large of an investment the celebrities are making, their endorsement alone gives "Fela!'s" profile a significant boost just a week before its premiere. "There's going to be an enormous incentive for people to investigate Fela when they know that Jay-Z and Will Smith are all rabid fans," Rikki Stein, Kuti's former co-manager and the executor of his estate, recently told Billboard. "It's a sign that the underground is moving overground."
"Fela!" will help find a larger audience for Kuti, who pioneered Afrobeat from the sounds of James Brown and West African high-life music, became a political icon in his native Nigeria and earned the admiration of everyone from Paul McCartney to the Brazilian singer Gilberto Gil before dying in 1997. Stein plans to capitalize on this exposure to cement his legacy as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
"I have an abiding regret that Fela never achieved the recognition he deserved during his lifetime," Stein says. "We have a long row to hoe in terms of general knowledge and acceptance."
"Quested: The Finest Studio Monitors in the World"
When he took over the management of DJM studios in the early eighties, Roger pursued his passion for accurate monitoring by developing a soft-dome monitor system that would deliver the high sound pressure levels demanded by clients with a clarity surpassing that only previously available in the best Hi-Fi speakers. These monitors quickly established themselves as a firm favourite with visiting engineers and producers, becoming prototypes for the Q215.
Requests from other recording complexes to design similar monitors for them started to arrive, the first being from London’s Rooster Studios. The Q215 was too large for the facility so the Q212 was born. Demand grew to such an extent that Roger decided to take the plunge and he started Quested Monitoring Systems.
Quested Monitoring System’s soft-dome designs have been imitated the world over but never equalled. To this day Roger continues to develop new monitor designs while maintaining close working relationships with engineers, producers, studios, driver manufacturers and electronics designers to produce the finest studio monitors in the world.
UMG Launches New Portals Aimed At Unsigned Artists
Three Universal Music Group labels today launched new Web portals designed to provide extended digital distribution and marketing support for unsigned artists.
The newly launched sites are powered by TuneCore's technology under a deal between the company and UMG announced back in July. The agreement allows UMG to resell TuneCore's digital distribution services to unsigned artists, as well as offer them additional marketing and production support, in order to let the label monitor their performance more closely with the intent of signing acts that show promise.
Universal Motown Republic Group launched two sites under the initiative: unimodigitaldistribution.com and republicdd.com. Island Def Jam Music Group unveiled idjfirstlook.com, while Interscope/Geffen/A&M launched interscopedigitaldistribution.com.
The Power or Ability To Invent
In a recent interview with Billboard Magazine, rocker Lenny Kravitz explained why he virtually ran away and spent the last 2 years living in Europe.
"I moved to Europe because of the climate in America -- and I don't just mean the economy or politics," says Kravitz. "It was also what my record label was going through. People were getting fired every week. There was no money, and people were operating out of fear as opposed to creativity...it just became a drag."
"I was like, 'This is not what I do,'" says Kravitz. "I do what I feel. I don't hire the producer du jour or have so-and-so rap on the middle part of a song."
His words got me thinking about how to stay creative in a world filled with bad news, no money, and constant struggle. Sometimes it just seems like your best isn’t good enough and you’re forever climbing a steep hill. So, I searched the internet for some ways to keep the mojo going, to keep the creative juices pumping. Here’s what I found…
Be willing to explore new ideas - Too many times, people find themselves in the same situations, surrounded by the same people, but wonder they keep getting the same results. America is probably the most diverse country in the world. Just the food you eat can take you on a global adventure so why not do the same with your music, writing or your surroundings? The next time you find out about a show or an event that might not "fit" with what you’re used to, take the plunge and check it out. You just might like it.
Always take notes - Whether you use a notebook, the notes section of your cell phone, sending yourself a text message, or using a digital recorder, you must take notes. You ever notice how the best ideas come at the most random times, usually inspired by something your friend says or something you see just walking around. I don’t know how many times I have thought of a hot line for a song, but later forgot how the melody went or even what the word were. Beyond writing down your next hook, just jotting down what you see for an hour straight while you sit at the bus stop or at a cafe could provide so much inspiration and realize a little stress.
Follow other creative people - Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Linked In, ReverbNation, Imeem, are just a few of the sites you can find an endless amount of creative people to follow. They have to be in just music either. Broaden your circles and follow people that work in other creative industries such as design, art, or dance. Or just follow people that you think have something creative to offer. Also, go to events that are NOT held at clubs, lounges, or venues. Atlanta is filled to the brim with more than just music.
Tidy loose ends later - A lot of musicians, artists, and songwriters are perfectionist in some shape or form. Too many times, we are caught up in how this song or project compares to what is on the radio or TV, what the "haters" might say, or how we can become the next Beyonce or Jay-Z. Instead of focusing on what can go wrong, just have fun with what you are creating and worry about the details later. That's what the mixing and mastering sessions are for.
Encourage risky behavior - Say whatever you want to say, even if it sounds weird. Dress however you want to dress whether or not it fits the latest trend. Don’t be afraid to stand out in a strange way. That is how trends are made and how music continues to evolve. Perfect examples = Lady Gaga, Prince, Michael Jackson, Afrika Bambaataa, Eminem, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Erykah Badu, etc.
Share – You need feedback to improve. By sharing your music with friends, family, on MySpace, on Soundcloud, at I dO Music, in mixtape form, at shows, or just catching the reactions of people as you blast your music in your car, you can get an idea of what needs to change, what needs to stay, and if you need to start over all together. *NOTE: for this to be affective, you have to stop thinking that everyone is a hater.
Start – Sometimes, this is that hardest thing to do, but it is the best way to keep that creativity intact. Just start writing, freestyling, singing, dancing, humming, tapping your feet, or drawing. You might be surprised what you come up with.
Feel free to post some of your tips on how to be and maintain your creativity. I look forward to hearing how you keep it moving. Later!
Best Buy and Dr. Dre Have Combined!!
Best Buy is aiming to become a destination for DJs. The retailer has partnered with Monster Cable and Beats by Dr. Dre headphones to launch its new in-store “Club Beats” area.
The big box retailer is creating a new section in all its stores where consumers can sample the latest audio, music, entertainment and technology products including DJ equipment, mixing software, turntables, headphones and laptops.
To help promote the new Club Beats, Best Buy will host a series of events featuring appearances from top music artists including Lady Gaga, Will.i.am and Dr. Dre. It will promote the events through local radio and newspaper advertisements. The retailer spent $213 million on advertising in 2008 and $142 million in the first eight months of 2009, per the Nielsen Company.
Best Buy sees a growing interest not only in DJing, particularly with the recent release of DJ Hero, but also in the concern for the sound quality of music. Beats by Dr. Dre, which was co-founded by Dre and Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine, was selected because of its commitment to giving the average listener a professional-quality listening experience through their headphones. Monster Cable, meanwhile, promises “make music sound better” in its ads.
Best Buy sees this DJ-focused offering as something brand new for mainstream retail. “It may not be simple to find these products in a mainstream environment—either you have to know what you need, or you have to talk to someone who is in the industry,” said Wendy Fritz, svp of merchandising for mobility for Best Buy. “What we’re trying to say is ‘hey you can do this,’ and when they come into the store our Blue Shirts can say ‘these are the three or four products you need to get started.’”
Seven stores will feature a full “experiential” Club Beats area, with a spectrum of products while 300 stores will features an “interactive” area, with similar options but slightly fewer products to try out. All remaining stores will include a “core” Club Beats area, with a product selection, merchandising signage and customer service assistance but less of a focus on interactivity.
Now That's "Brand Power!"
"Branding" is quickly becoming the most used "buzz word" in our beloved music business. From personal branding to record label and artist branding, marketing people everywhere are trying desperately to access the power of a successful branding campaign. "IdOMusic" is a great example of what branding can do... After coming across our popular "IdOMusic" flyers, Anthony Evans, a student at the Art Institute of Atlanta actually tattooed our logo to his hand! Now that's what I call "brand power!" All I can say is Wow! You can't pay for that type of advertising and consumer loyalty! Take note... there's no limit to the things you can do when you have a powerful brand. Just think about what comes to mind when you think "Apple" or "Microsoft" or "Universal Music Group" or "Def Jam" or "Patchwerk". These brands have power and so can yours. Kudos to the entire "IdOMusic" team for executing their branding campaign so well!
