RECAP - "IdOMusic" Last Week

(Click the image above to see all the pictures from the event)

For the second installment of the year, I dO Music attracted an astounding crowd of close to 300 artists, songwriters, producers, and others to Apache CafĂ©. This last edition brought out more people than ever; a testament to IdM’s growing popularity in the city. SIR Magazine and our other supporters helped us make this edition one for the books!!

If you haven't heard yet, Crown Royal has taken a major role in helping us further the development of emerging music talents in the city. Now when you perform at any edition of I dO Music you'll automatically have a chance to win an on-air interview with Hot 107.9's Emperor Searcy. To top it off...clips from these interviews will be inserted into IdM radio ads that will air throughout the month...so you'll have more than one opportunity to be heard! (Now if that's not music to your ears, I don't know what is!?!?)

Our host Miss Juice werked the stage with 107.9's Emperor Searcy and after a long hiatus, Rob Watson, our in-house A&R critic, came by to give our performers some raw and uncut feedback (it wasn't pretty - but it was reall!).

The performers, Organix, Akshan, Big Rec, Promise, Young RE, Monica Mason, and Eddie Meeks brought a night full of exitement. Akshan with his “February Soft” got a great response from the audience. I do Music fav Joe Billz hopped on stage and gave us a treat of things to come with his upcoming project. Big Rec got the crowd hype with his “Unleashed” a track that is known to get you out of your seat (shout out to Trueschool Tuesdays)! Promise delivered us with her voice through songs like, “Fall into the groove” and “Breaking Petals”.

The topic for the panel was “Werking the Biz: Open Q&A”. The panel was carried by the likes of Rob Watson (KEM, India Arie, Dem Franchise Boyz), Grammy nominated producer Vaushaun “Maestro” Brooks, Moses Davis (Warner Bros. Music Group), DJ Judge Mental (Hittmen DJs), and Tremayne Anchrum (ASCAP).

Panel Notes

The Current State of Hip-Hop Music

Moses- "Make moves and don't wait for people to make them for you."

Rob Watson- "The person who buys music controls it"

DJ Judgemental- "Personally I like music I wouldn't normally play, but I'm limited to playing whatever (the people) want me to play.

What do you do to stop the “treadmill lifestyle”?

Maestro- "Start doing something different, you have to create an avenue that is built for you only!"

Moses- "Don’t let the media control the direction of music...just make good music that YOU like."

Your path into the business?

Maestro- "I started playing piano; then I became a school teacher but wasn't really happy do I DECIDED!..I decided to make it happen by any means and God blessed me!"

Rob Watson- "All I can say is...surround yourself with good people"

When working with others, what should one look for.

DJ Judgemental- "work ethic is important to watch for when working with an artist."

Moses- "Being a great listener can come a long way when it comes to business transaction."

Rob Watson- "If you know more than your manager then that person should not be your manager."

Maestro- "Value the opinion of others..."

Tremayne-"Put yourself in a good environment. Find someone who fits your music. Producers are dime a dozen, you'll meet people in weirdest places."
