Fashion Of Songwriting

Songwriters are the trendsetters in society. The genre is suppose to reflect the sign of the times. Popular hit songs usually tell the story of what the atmosphere is around them. Many developing songwriters striving for success try to write songs similar to the current hits they hear on the radio or TV by favorite artist/producers who they wish to emulate.

Creating music that is current is not very likely a successful route to a hit song. Why? The songs which are successful and popular at the moment were most likely to have been written some time ago. The artist and writers who worked on the current songs had a idea of what would be successful and popular in the future. The way this comes about is by being aware what is going on around you. Just like a fashion designer knowing the trend seasons ahead of time. The end result is if a developing songwriter emulates a current hit song which may have been created six months previously and then takes another six moths for the developing writer's song to reach the marketplace, it will be a year behind the times.

We live in the age where the drums and drum loops are a major driving force and influence. The rhythm often defines the song. It is safe to say drums have become the official "time stamp". It has become easy to identify the era in which a record was first released by listening to the style and sound of the drums. Believe it or not sample drum loops can be extremely useful tools for the songwriter. The time stamp that was created in 2007 may make the song sound completely irrelevant in 2009, despite all of your attention to melody and lyric. Its deeper then just listening to a track and spilling your mind over the beat. Don't trap yourself within the drum loop. Here are a few questions to ask yourself.

1. Inspiration for a new song. Can you think of a potential song title or beginning melodic idea immediately on listening to the loop?

2. Current sounding? Does the loop sound contemporary?

3. Will this loop "time stamp" your song when the song is listened to five years from now? Will the beat sound old?

Set yourself up for success and be the TRENDSETTER!
